When I took on the sale of this field, it never crossed my mind that these would be the ones to buy it. A field in the middle of nowhere, with no water or electricity. Although it had a public dirt road, you couldn’t drive on it even with a four-by-four, due to the rocks scattered across it. As if that wasn’t enough, the plot bordered a protected zone. While it did have a nice mountain view and it was a very large parcel, everything pointed to this being an impossible sale.
Well I was wrong. Out of nowhere, a young English couple appeared, one holds a European passport. Their dream is to build a farm with sheep, cows, horses, grow vegetables, fruit and plenty of trees, dogs, cats. I never imagined that such a young couple, both around 25, would turn out to be the buyers of this property.
I remember as a child going out to the fields and helping with the harvest in the vineyards. Now I, who grew up in a village, live in the city center because it suits my work. And yet these two, who grew up in London, one of the most cosmopolitan and multicultural cities in the world, are moving to the middle of nowhere, to a village 40 minutes outside the city, to live off the grid, work as farmers and live off what they produce, alongside their animals. I think we have come full circle in Cyprus, we left the fields for the city, and they are leaving the city for the fields.
And I don’t think they are alone. I believe there is a market out there, made up of people from all over the world who share this dream. Because regardless of the technological progress that has come and is still to come, our instinct to return to nature is written into our DNA. More and more people will seek out this way of life, growing their own food and living at a different pace, free from the stress of everyday life.
One thing is certain. Some sales you enjoy, you savour them in a different way, especially when they lead to the realization of a lifelong dream. This was one of those.
